Flexibility in the Workplace: A Benefit for Everyone
April 22, 2019Do you allow employees to work remotely? Create their own schedules? A recent survey reveals that 80% of workers feel that a flexible schedule increases their productivity, creativity and job satisfaction.
In today’s highly competitive workplace, providing flexibility is a key part of attracting and retaining employees. Employees want managers who are willing and able to readily respond to changing circumstances and expectations…and vice versa. Learn how you can improve or expand your environment’s flexibility.
What defines a flexible work environment?
Allowing employees to work remotely-In today’s working world, employees expect the freedom to work from home when needed or on a regular basis. If you don’t have a work from home policy, you’ll want to consider instituting one. Employees value the opportunity to work on their own time.
According to a recent study by Randstad US, a global provider of flexible work and human resources, 80% of workers say that agile work (the ability to work from anywhere, anytime) increases their productivity, creativity and job satisfaction.
Enabling workers to vary arrival and departure times- Gone are the days when the work day is strictly 9-5. Consider allowing your employees to decide when they come in and when they leave, as long as they work the prescribed number of hours.
Making exceptions for unforeseen family circumstances and personal needs- Allowing an employee to take an extended leave for a family emergency or medical need is important, and even more impactful if you pay them during their absence. Providing part time schedule for new parents- Allowing new parents to ease back to work with part time or work-from-home options is hugely impactful. Maternity and paternity leaves allow working parents to make time for what’s important and come back to work more productive.
What are the benefits of a flexible workplace?
Flexible managers make an effort to accommodate personal needs, which is an indispensable value for employees. Employees who feel they have the freedom to accomplish goals at their own pace will likely feel more compelled to get the job done right.
Here are some other benefits of workplace flexibility:
- Attracts and retains talent- Another recent study shows that workers who are given flexible work options are 48% more likely to rate their job satisfaction very highly.
