Will the BEPS Project Solve International Tax Issues?

May 11, 2015

Though it is clear that the use of multinational taxation strategies is an issue, the BEPS project is an ambitious venture for the world and may be too challenging.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) project, the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project has captured the attention of the public and governments around the world, but it faces some unique challenges that might hurdle implementation.

Why are Countries Hesitant?

The BEPS project is a huge undertaking, and many countries have expressed differing views about it:

  • Concerns about individual countries acting on their own in implementing various measures to tax multinationals.
  • The desires to protect their respective tax bases now rather than wait form completion of the BEPS project.
  • Pressures on local revenue authorities to raise revenue collections at a time of ever-increasing demands.
